"The solid waste arising from human activities is one of the major environmental problems in urban areas causing extensive pollution and posing a threat to human health. In recent times, the problem of solid waste disposal - both domestic and industrial - has become very acute in almost every city in India because of the lack of resources, unplanned growth and limited disposal facilities. As a result, solid wastes are being dumped in a haphazard manner in various parts of the cities causing severe environmental problems. Urban solid waste management has, therefore, become a nation-wide concern in India."
